Best ingredients for managing skin pigmentation

Skin tanning and pigmentation is a common cosmetic concern for Indian skin. Though there are multiple ingredients to target skin pigmentation, a systematic routine will help manage the skin pigmentation. There are different causes of skin pigmentation. While sun damage is the most common cause of skin pigmentation, not all pigmentation is because of sun damage.

Systemic disorders such as hyperthyroidism, diabetes, prediabetes and obesity could also be major causes of pigmentation especially in the closed regions of the skin such as the neck, underarms and groin region. Thus, a clinical evaluation is required for managing skin pigmentation. While depigmenting agents are useful to reduce skin pigmentation, a systematic approach with depigmenting skin care products is recommended to get the maximum benefit.

A morning routine with a brightening face wash. Skin GRID recommendations include- Glogeous face wash, Ehtiglo face wash, Skinclined foaming face wash and Skinbelle Brigtening face wash. This should be followed by sunscreen in the morning. The Skin GRID recommendations are- La Shield Lite sunscreen SPF 50, and ISH Ray Defend gel SPF 30 for someone with acne-prone skin. Others include Acne UV SPF 30, Omniscreen SPF 50.  Night depigmenting agents such as the Tranexa Brite serum, Azeglow 10% serum or Truderma Brightening serum are Skin GRID recommendations for all skin types. This could be combined as alternate days applications or used on its own for a better result.

A consistent use of serums will help to reduce skin pigmentation. Mild to moderate skin pigmentation could be tackled with this routine. However, if the pigmentation is strong and persistent, combining with procedures such as chemical peels, hydrafacial or laser skin toning will be helpful to reduce the skin pigmentation.

A long-term use of the products is required as well, to see a response to the products. Similarly, evaluation of the reasons for skin pigmentation is a must to understand the reasons for the pigmentation and manage it effectively.
